Understanding how fabrics are made is crucial. Some fabrics are made from oil, like polyester others like acrylic and viscous rayon produce a large amount of toxins and deplete the rain forest.
Use the Label Checker by OEKO-TEK to help choose more sustainable fabrics. They are an independent testing & certification organization.
Use the GOTS Public Record to identify fabric contain a minimum of 70% organic fibers.
Here's a few buying tips:
1. Organic PLU codes have a 5-digit number that starts with 9. Non-organic start with 4.
2. Look for companies that go beyond fair trade and incorporate economic empowerment.
3. Biodegradable vs Reusable . Unless you compost reusable is better.
4. Bisphenol-A (BPA) is not the only chemical in plastic. Glass or lead-free ceramic is better.
